I’ll be focusing on the functional-focused apps, so let’s start with perhaps the most instantly useful of them:
Groupy
All windows in a group are resized to the same size. I’ve had a fairly bug-free experience with the 2018 version of
Stardock Object Desktop
Standalone Groupy is $9.99 with a 30-day free trial. There are plenty of free alternatives to
SpaceMonger
The ability to visualize storage usage can be very useful and there are a number of free programs that do this. The classic WinDirStat is reliable but inelegant and slow (at least in my memory)
Stardock sells SpaceMonger for $14.99, and I wouldn’t recommend buying it alone, but it’s a good value-add for OD
Multiplicity
Stardock’s KVM software Multiplicity is its most distinguished and segmented offering. OD includes the basic version, which lets you control two PCs with the same keyboard and mouse, but it lacks the virtual-monitors, file transferring, and simultaneous logins of the $40 and $100 versions. If you’re interested in upgrading to the KVM or KVM Pro version and have OD, Stardock offers a discounted price (around $20 for KVM with a coupon)
Multiplicity is a fairly powerful program and very reliable with a wired Ethernet connection (Wifi can cause lagging with any program like this). It works by having a primary PC tied to the license and unlimited non-licensed secondary PCs. OD contains 5 licenses for all programs including Multiplicity KM, but note that if you purchase KVM or KVM Pro, the license is only for a single PC. If you buy OD and KVM (like I did), you have 5 KM licenses and 1 KVM license
A surprisingly useful feature that the basic KM version lacks is simultaneous locking and unlocking Windows – KM prevents you from locking the secondary PC with Win+L. With KVM, you can lock and unlock both simultaneously even if they have different passwords
I use two-PC setups at work and home, and I wouldn’t recommend either without a backup keyboard or hardware KM switch, but Multiplicity KVM is definitely worth checking out if you’re interested
Fences
The rest of Stardock’s lineup is more aesthetics focused, and Fences will be the last one I discuss in detail
I’m biased against using the Windows Desktop – why press Win+D, navigate to the icon, double-click it, and exit the desktop view when you could simply press the Win key and type whatever you want? No need to move your hand to your slowest tool (the mouse) and rely on hand-eye coordination to waste time on this outdated interface!
That said, it’s an ok place to store custom shortcuts, there’s merit in using it to visualize what programs you have, and it’s useful for mobile devices. If you like using the desktop, then Fences is for you
Fences
The Rest
Most of the rest of the programs are aesthetics, like Deskscapes – which lets you set animations for the desktop wallpaper, or Window FX – which provides a fairly exhaustive list of customizations including a few “useful” features. The last truly functional app is called Tiles, but it’s a bit worse than useless as you can see from Stardock’s own demo – besides being slow and unwieldy, it greatly reduces your screen’s content area and I can only imagine it being a handicap
